ECM32: The unstoppable raise of electron diffraction

Thu, 29.08.2019

After 5 days of intensive discussion at our booth and several dozens of leads richer the ELDICO team leaves full of confidence from ECM32, Europe biggest gathering of the crystallographic community, that took place from August 18th to 23rd in Vienna, Austria, with more than 1.000 visitors.

“My first ECM was over 30 years ago in Vienna as well and since then ECM was always a meeting where big things have been revealed. But this time was particularly interesting because I believe we witnessed a new technology evolving to broader application: electron diffraction. I believe Mauro Gemmi et al. are right when they call this a revolution, and ELDIDO is at the forefront of this movement“, says Eric Hovestreydt, Chief Sales Officer at ELDICO Scientific.

Electron diffraction gained much interest in microsymposions, at the poster session as well as in numerous discussions at our booth.

In the highly frequented microsymposion “Electron Crystallography as a Tool for Structure Solution and Refinement”, chaired by Xiaodong Zou and Tatiana Gorelik, and among Louisa Meshi, Tsumoru Shintake , Robert Bücker , Claudia Millán Nebot it was Dr. Tim Gruene (scientific advisor of ELDICO, and lead author of the ground breaking paper in Angewandte Chemie, Intl. Edition, which appeared 2018) who presented latest findings.

The ELDICO poster ON THE DESIGN OF A DEDICATED ELECTRON DIFFRACTOMETER presented by Dr. Eric Hovestreydt gained much attention (click here for download). The proof of concept on organic samples was shown with a new polymorph of a highly active API. From that the ELDOC diffractometer will works sample size from 10 to 1000 nm, radically simplified EM design, improved goniometer and R1 value below 10%.

Last but not least: ELDICO’s ED lottery. With kind support of Dr. Tatiana Gorelik from the University of Ulm (Germany) Dr. Toms Rekis, from the Laboratory of Crystallography at University of Bayreuth (Germany), one out of the more than 20 participants, who answered all questions correctly, was finally drawn as the lucky winner of an iPad. Good luck & enjoy!
